Regal Commodore 3560
By Randy Vance

...In the romantic days of wooden cruisers, rich mahogany interiors were a side effect of mahogany hulls. So were dry rot, leaky seams and a short boat life. Regal's new Commodore 3560 has retained the rich look of wood in the salons and cabins, enhancing them with Corian countertops. And they've built investment quality into the hull and fittings by using components and materials proven to be most durable. The goal is to give boaters fun and adventure without the headaches of tedious maintenance. That's what we call romance.

...The solid fiberglass hull is … solid. That was our impression from a recent sea trial. Equipped with its maximum power of 840 horses, the Commodore reached 39 mph and could have gotten at least another mile per hour if it hadn't been for damp, humid weather. Midrange power is more important than top speed on cruisers, though, and these engines delivered it. We'd support Regal's choice of four-blade props, which enhance midrange power and add lift on the hole shot. Cruisers aren't expected to pop out like ski boats, but this one rewarded each nudge of the throttle with excellent acceleration all the way to top speed.

...We've driven some cruisers of this class that shuddered through seas, taking each wave personally. Not this one. Composite construction techniques, superior adhesives and solid lay-up procedures make this boat more than seaworthy. In aggressive maneuvers, the deep-V hull carved its own "rail" through chop and glided along in a confident gait with a ho-hum, been-there-done-that attitude that said, "Now can we go to Aruba?"

...In close quarters, the twin inboards and long hull made docking maneuvers comfortable. Nicely adjusted binnacles allowed easy shifting and smooth throttle adjustments, essential to accurate work in tight spots. Instrumentation was all clearly visible and unobstructed. Plenty of dash space is left for navigation equipment -- ours featured optional GPS, VHF and autopilot. Space still remained for gadgets.

...Belowdecks a sumptuous aft cabin rejoins the main salon by pulling the privacy curtains. A remarkably ample forward stateroom includes a queen-size berth with full stand-up headroom and sumptuous décor. Close the door for privacy. The salon also features a convertible dinette that adds sleeping for a third couple.

...Topside, secure footing in bulkhead steps provides easy access to the bow for anchoring or lounging. In the cockpit a C-shaped lounge and dual captain's chair give comfort to cruising partners. Carpet unsnaps for easy cleaning and the cockpit is easy to wash down, draining overboard.

...Club Med fans will appreciate the style of the aft couch that converts to a berth-size lounge. Integrated into the starboard fiberglass coaming is an entertainment galley with fridge and sink. Portside, a cooler compartment and steps to a gunwale walkway are molded in.

...The swim platform features easy boarding access, a teak sole and a hot and cold shower for wash downs. It's your patio at sea, and crowns the romance on board with a fun play space that will be most popular for partying at anchor.
